Communications Specialist III - Office of Research & Engagement US-Tennessee-Knoxville Communications Specialist III- Office of Research & EngagementRegular Full-time, Pay Grade 37 This position performs complex communication and marketing tasks including the following activities: writing, editing, proof-reading, graphic design, lay-out and written and electronic materials, as well as presentation development. Works closely with communications team members to create and implement original print and electronic media designs for the Office of Research and Engagement that reflect a solid understanding of the principles of interactive and graphic design within existing brand guidelines. Assists Communications Director with strategic and content planning as needed. May provide guidance to designated personnel. Communications Support Plans, designs, coordinates, develops and creates high-profile content at an advanced level for broad distribution. Writes high-profile original copy in a variety of genres, including talking points, speeches, and presentations for ORE and campus leadership. Prepares and distributes fact sheets, news releases, scripts, to university and external partner stakeholders. Proofs and edits materials for consistency, style, format, and messaging. Provides leadership on projects, from initial concepts to creation and curation. Plans and directs development and communication of information designed to keep public informed of university s research capabilities and accomplishments. Liaises with ORE management to determine communications priorities. Graphic and Publication Design Assists with the design of digital and print pieces for internal and external publication. Collaborates with supervisor on graphic design and layout for printed short- and long-form publications including annual, quarterly, and monthly reports; brochures; flyers; promotional items; and interactive pieces, including websites and presentations. Designs and/or updates printed communication materials with a high visibility impact. Creates engaging visuals for print pieces that possess a strong sense of composition, typography, and color within existing brand guidelines. Ensures compliance with accessibility standards for print, web, and digital content. Meets with clients to discuss needs, audience, content, and functionality of all pieces and provides advice and feedback to clients based on industry standards and best practices. Marketing Support Develops promotional materials, advertising, and distribution strategies. Conducts surveys to help develop targeted communications materials and platforms for effective distribution. Determines which media sources (television, radio, magazines, Internet and social media) best reach target audiences. Works in close conjunction with ORE's Communication Specialist to analyze key metrics of communications and marketing efforts (social media, websites, and newsletters) and reports analysis of data to Director of Communications and ORE leadership for strategic and content planning purposes. Under the supervision of the Director of Research Communications, develops integrated communications and marketing plans for ORE that align with the university communications strategy. Plans and directs development and communication of information designed to keep public informed of university s research capabilities and accomplishments. Liaises with ORE management to determine marketing priorities. Event Planning Assists with the planning, organization, and execution of high-profile events hosted by ORE. Independently plans and assists with events targeted to a smaller, lower-profile audience. Provides photographic and written content for post-event publication. Participates in post-event assessment and strategy sessions. Performs administrative tasks, including entering time spent on projects; emailing and liaising with clients, attending staff and project planning meetings. Other duties as assigned. Requirements: Education Bachelor's degree in communication, marketing, or related field required. Master's degree in communication, marketing, or related field preferred. Required level/type of experience and/or years of experience 2+ years of professional experience directly related to duties and responsibilities specified. An associates degree and/or vocational or technical training will be considered in lieu of bachelor's degree with additional relevant professional experience Preferred level/type of experience and/or years of experience: 4+ years of professional experience directly related to duties and responsibilities specified. Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities: Advanced knowledge of the principles of effective communication and marketing. Advanced knowledge of digital and print graphic design skills and best practices. Ability to think conceptually and critically and make use of good political and negotiation skills. Advocates for best practices in communication and marketing. Advanced experience with the following programs: Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, Audition), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and project management tools. Competencies/Qualifications: (preferably in higher education). Proven written and verbal communication skills. General knowledge of accessibility standards (digital and print). Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. General design skills across several platforms. Experience with the following programs: Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, Audition), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and project management tools. Ability to prioritize, manage, and deliver multiple projects on a rolling delivery schedule. Ability to present concepts and designs to clients or team members in a clear, confident manner. Ability to produce creative work within a system of established templates and content delivery systems. Ability to work well independently and as a member of a collaborative team; act professionally; provide and be receptive to feedback and constructive criticism; be a self-motivated learner; teach, mentor, and share knowledge with others; and build and maintain good customer satisfaction for the Research Communications team.
