Job Description:
Job Description The University of Tennessee Medical Center is a
tertiary academic medical center. The hospital serves as a referral
center for Eastern Tennessee and regions of Kentucky and North
Carolina. The inpatient obstetric service is staffed by labor and
delivery nurses, patient care technicians, OB/Gyn providers and
resident physicians, with 24-hour availability for anesthesia and
neonatal care. The OB Hospitalist coverage provides availability,
oversight, and a team of individuals whose sole focus is managing
the patient in labor during their shift. At the University of
Tennessee Medical Center we have created a hybrid model that
focuses on quality, safety, and education services in women’s
healthcare (meaning, coverage expands beyond the obstetric model to
include management of the complex gynecologic medical and surgical
patient). As such, our Academic OB/Gyn Hospitalist position
includes labor and delivery shifts, rotating coverage of the
gynecology service, resident continuity clinic oversight, and
departmental and program leadership. The role of an Academic OB/GYN
Hospitalist is filled by experienced physicians eager to
participate in patient care and resident education. Future
candidate(s) should possess excellent clinical and teaching skills
and feel comfortable practicing in an evidence-based academic
environment with students, residents, fellows, advanced practice
nurses, midwives, and colleagues. Implementation of the Hospitalist
model allowed UTMC to: 1. Optimize patient safety and quality
outcomes 2. Standardize the delivery of Obstetric services 3.
Enhance the consistency of resident education 4. Improve efficiency
to patient flow processes Responsibilities In keeping with
fulfillment of the goals of the OB/Gyn Hospitalist,
responsibilities include, but are not limited to: ? Staff the day
shift of L&D from 7:15 am to 5pm when assigned o Responsive to
house officers (resident physicians), and maintain visibility on
the unit for majority of the day o Responsive and communicates with
Anesthesia colleagues (attending to attending for Urgent CDs) and
other attendings with purpose of helping serve in centralized
capacity alongside the RN Team Leader (Charge nurse) o Provide
comprehensive intrapartum care including: antepartum assessment,
labor management, delivery o Provides intrapartum care for house
staff patients o Staff emergencies related to management of early
pregnancy/ pregnancy loss o Staff HS PPTLs scheduled during shift ?
Present and teaching at 7:15am board sign out ? Communicates
directly with nighttime attending at 5pm sign out ? Provides
postpartum rounding for complicated house staff patients ? Provides
oversight on triage patients ? Serves as a consultant to university
midwives (and Tennova midwives) when their patients require a
higher level of care o If level of care requires physicians take
over, from 7:15am-5pm this team provides that service/care ?
Supervise infant circumcision for house staff neonates ? Responds
to OB trauma pages (picks up pager, wears pager, signs out pager) ?
Provides consultation along with departmental residents for low
risk Emergency Room obstetric consultation while on L&D and
provides back up for MFM when not available. ? Oversee and Manage
House Staff (HS) GYN service(s) o Round on inpatient HS GYN
patients o Provides advanced gynecologic care to OB/Gyn colleagues
o Staff inpatient HS GYN consults o Staff HS ER Consults o Staff
emergent HS GYN surgeries o Cover scheduled HS GYN Surgeries ? Only
emergent or scheduled minor surgeries while also covering L&D ?
Provide outpatient clinic services as agreed upon outside of
Laborist coverage schedule ? May provide on campus back up for
colleagues of any group needing emergent assistance or requesting
specific short-term coverage ? Participates in peer review
performance improvement activities for UHS ? Participates in peer
review performance improvement activities for the L&D unit ?
Participate in L&D simulations and team training sessions ?
Each OB/Gyn Hospitalist may have designated, unique academic duties
relative to the Department of Ob/Gyn as a whole and will need to
maintain requirements for GME as discussed with Department Chair ?
Participates in GME related scholarly activity ( Grand Rounds,
Didactics, Mentor Program, Applicant Interviews, CCC, etc.) ?
Participate in Department committee meetings (Department meeting,
PI/QI, Steering committee, Credentialing, MEC, etc.) Required
qualifications ? Doctorate degree in medicine from an accredited
college approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and
Hospitals of American Medical Association, a Doctorate degree in
Osteopathy from a college accredited by the American Osteopathic
Association, or by the permanent certification by the ECFMG. ?
Successful completion of a residency program in OB/Gyn which has
been approved by the Accreditation Council for GME. ? Active
Candidate of ABOG or Board Certified ? Experience in performing
operative vaginal deliveries and complicated cesarean deliveries ?
Experience in managing postpartum patients Schedule Estimated
monthly schedule includes: Average of 15-18 “shifts” of scheduled
work per month, not including vacation, CME, and holidays. Shifts
are defined by a combination of the any or all of the following,
based on applicants/hospitalists specific interests. 1. Labor and
delivery “Laborist” (shifts are typically 7am-5pm or 5pm to 7am) 2.
Resident outpatient clinic supervision, usually combined with
Administrative time for half day. May also include Student health
clinic/other outpatient clinics as agreed upon by Department chair
and UHS. 3. Gynecologic surgery (includes both private patients as
well as resident clinic cases/ inpatient ED and emergent surgeries)
4. Gynecologic inpatient and consult service coverage 5.
Administrative duties for UHS or Academic Department 6. Selective
opportunities for seeing Private outpatients, typically includes
private referral for gynecologic major surgeries. 7. Any overnight
shifts are followed by 24-hour shift off *Specific schedule will be
coordinated between Department Chairman, Director of Obstetrics,
and University Health Systems.
