Clinical Veterinarian - Animal Resource Lab US-Tennessee-Knoxville Regular Full-time, Pay Grade 47 Clinical Veterinarian The College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a Clinical Veterinarian to provide veterinary clinical care and preventative medicine for a variety of species and to maintain a campus-wide health surveillance program. The Clinical Veterinarian assists the Director & University Attending Veterinarian with facility management, IACUC activities, compliance issues, training animal care staff and investigators, collaboration with investigators and may serve as University Attending Veterinarian in the Director's absence. There may also be teaching at undergraduate, graduate, professional and residency levels. The role is shared between two clinical veterinarians. Typical Duties and Responsibilities:Is responsible for clinical rounds within the Lab Animal Facilities and may serve as the University Attending Veterinarian in the Director's absence. Diagnoses, treats, and controls diseases and injuries among research animals and performs surgery on sick and injured animals, prescribing and administering drugs, medicines, and vaccines as needed. Directs technicians in the treatment of sick animals, ensuring all appropriate charts and records are maintained. Trains technicians, graduate students, veterinarians, and investigators in areas such as handling, restraint, injection, blood collection, anesthesia, analgesia, and surgery and euthanasia techniques. Assists the Director with facility management, IACUC activities and compliance issues. Inspects assigned facilities as least once weekly for general condition, animal husbandry, research protocol adherence, animal health status and identifies potential problem areas. Works closely with faculty and staff to resolve any noted deficiencies. Develops and maintains records in the veterinary care and health surveillance programs. Oversees the animal conditioning, breeding, and quarantine programs. Participates in the preparation of grant applications for facilities improvement and resource grants. Participates in the development, periodic review, and revision of the standard operating procedures for the department. Provides direct support for regulator and compliance activities of the Animal Care and Use Program, which involves assisting with IACUC review and correspondence, facility inspections and program reviews. Minimum Qualifications: Completion of an accredited Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program or a certificate of equivalent training accepted by the AVMA. License to practice veterinary medicine in a state or territory of the US. Post-graduate training or a minimum of three years experience in laboratory animal medicine. Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience in a land-grant academic environment. ACLAM board certification. Experience with training or teaching. Knowledge of animal compliance and federal regulations. Knowledge of lab animal health/medicine, diagnostics, treatment, surgical procedures and clinical care of a wide variety of research animal species, primarily the large animal model. Knowledge of laboratory animal facility operations. Knowledge and awareness of microbial and viral pathogens (no greater than BSL-2). Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed: Strong knowledge of veterinary medicine as acquired through professional training, education, and experience. Knowledge of MS office and Sharepoint. Strong Interpersonal communication skills, including written and verbal communication skills. Organizational skills. Ability to work in a highly fluid, complex, and ever-changing environment related to time management. Ability to travel between on campus facilities.
